How to Choose the Perfect Piece of Art for Your Home or Office
Share
I have a confession to make... I'm not naturally gifted at curating interior spaces. This might surprise you since I’m a creative who spends much of my time contemplating pattern and color on canvas, but if I'm being honest, I’ve never been the best at arranging bookcases or picking the perfect pillows.
Now, I’m certainly not as bad as I once was. After working for a couple of interior designers, I’ve gradually picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. Still, I’m no expert. And that’s why I believe my perspective on choosing art for your space might be a little different.
A mentor of mine once told me something that I’ve held onto ever since: Buy the art you love.
I know, I know—it’s not groundbreaking advice or some deep design insight. But it’s truly how I feel. Art is such a personal and unique expression that it would be a disservice to yourself if you settle on a piece just because it’s trendy or happens to match your pillows. A good piece of art is for the long haul. It should be something you’ll cherish for years—something that resonates with you.
I get that my view on this might be a little biased, given that I’m an artist myself. Of course, I believe it should be a crime to buy art from, say, a big-box store like HomeGoods! But I challenge you to embrace the adventure of discovering art you truly love. Art that speaks to you in ways you can’t always explain. Art that will hang on your walls, surrounding you and your family for years to come. Whether it’s my work or someone else’s, find that piece you truly love.
Pinterest and Instagram are fantastic resources for discovering original, authentic artists creating incredible pieces—from paintings to prints to sculptures. You’ll find so much talent out there. I also love to browse antique stores for unique and original artwork. Every now and then, you can stumble upon a gem that adds something special to your collection.
